Luke 19:1-10
Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.
Lack of height is what kept Zacchaeus from seeing Jesus. What is keeping you from seeing Jesus?
Is it shame? Your sinful life has piled layer upon layer of guilt and shame on you. You don’t see Jesus because you don’t want to see Jesus. He certainly could not love someone as unlovable as you, right?
Is it fear that keeps you from seeing Jesus? Seeing Jesus and having Him as part of your everyday life will mean acknowledging that you are no longer in control. His will be done is a scary thought for anyone.
Is it your focus on accumulating earthly wealth that is keeping you from seeing Him? You spend all your time and effort on your job so that you can make more money and aquire more things, so there is no time left for Jesus.
Maybe it’s apathy. Your life is good enough. Why do you even need to see Jesus?
We could learn a thing or two from Zacchaeus. He wanted to see Jesus (was seeking to see who Jesus was), knew exactly what it was that was keeping him from seeing Jesus (he was short in stature), and did something about it (climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus).
It’s not too late to start climbing!
