Do It Again…Then I’ll Believe!

January 7, 2015

“Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!”  He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were completely astounded. They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened. (Mark 6:45-52)

The disciples, staunch followers of Jesus, had just seen Jesus feed 5,000 people using five loaves of bread and two fish. Viewing that would have been a life-altering miracle experience, right? That event alone would make a believer of anyone, not to mention His loyal friends.

Yet later that very same day, Jesus walked on the water and calmed the winds, and the disciples “were completely astounded.” Hadn’t Jesus already proven Himself to them? Clearly “they had not understood the incident of the loaves.”

It is easy to point fingers at the disciples; they are easy targets. But if we’re honest, don’t we do the very same thing?

How many times has Jesus proven Himself to us? How many times has He provided for us, answered our prayers, or provided us with a sense of comfort and peace? Yet when times are tough – when the sea is rough and our boat is being tossed about – we panic. We try to work through things on our own, refusing to give up control and turn our problems over to Him. We fail to trust.

Jesus said, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” We view ourselves as strong and courageous when we try to manage life’s burdens on our own. On the contrary, our “hearts are hardened” when we only look to ourselves in times of trouble.

Be not afraid – the courageous thing to do is to trust Jesus.

  1. Wonderful insight. It’s that complete surrender thing again, isn’t it?! 😉 This morning, I was reflecting again on your suggestion to just let God love me. Thanks for your constant inspiration. God bless!
