Firmness of Heart

June 11, 2015 – Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle

Acts 11:21-26

“…he (Barnabas) rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart…” Acts 11:21-26

We don’t often think of our heart as being firm, but more likely soft, open, and loving. So what does Barnabas mean when he tells the people in Antioch to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart?

Firmness of heart is not to be confused with hardness of heart. The firmness to which Barnabas refers is the firmness of our resolve, our commitment to love God and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. We must be unwavering in this commitment. When we are, not only will we have firmness of heart, but our hearts will be full as well.
