Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word…They presented these men to the Apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. (Acts 6:1-7)
We have the beginning of the ministry of the deacon as the Apostles chose, and laid hands upon, seven men from among the disciples.
Since being ordained a permanent deacon in June 2012, I have had bouts with feelings of unworthiness. Just look at the description from Acts — am I reputable and filled with the Spirit and wisdom? Worthy or not, I was called and I do my best to serve God and the Church.
The fact that some are called to specific ministries in the Church does not let everyone else off the hook. All of us are called to live the Gospel by serving God and others. No one should sit back and think, “That’s their job.”
God needs all of us. We are all members of the Body of Christ, and as such, have an obligation to live our faith by spreading our faith.
