I had the opportunity to attend a retreat for deacons this past weekend. The retreat presenter, Fr. Bede Cisco, OSB, spoke on the Components of the Spiritual Life.
Here are a few takeaways I’d like to share:
- God acted first; there exists a primacy of grace. Everything we do in our lives is a response to Him. “It was not you that chose Me, but I that chose you” (John 15:16).
- We are God’s creation, and He created us “very good.” Day 6 of the creation story: “God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female – he created them. God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good” (Genesis 1:27,31). We are made in His image; we should accept and acknowledge both our gifts and our limitations. Fr. Bede suggested that if we did not know what are limitations are, we should ask our spouse:)
- We are a mystery to ourselves. We continually discover new things about ourselves. Often God puts us in situations that call us to use gifts we didn’t even know we had!
Chew on those…I’ll share a few more tomorrow!
