Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi

October 4, 2016

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi.

A few quotes from St. Francis:

  • Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
  • Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.
  • While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.
  • Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to his beloved is that of overcoming self.

Consider taking a moment today to pray the beautiful words attributed to him:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Amen
