We May Be Called Children of God

January 3, 2017

See what love the Father has bestowed on us
that we may be called the children of God. (1 John 3:1)

The first reading today is an excellent message to reflect upon this Christmas season. It calls us to consider the awesome gift we received from God -the gift of His only begotten Son.

The gift was given to us for one reason – God’s deep, unconditional, and abiding love for us. It’s that simple – He loved us enough to offer up His Son. In doing so, we may be called children of God.

To be a child of God comes with a two-fold responsibility: First, we must open ourselves up to receiving His gift. Second, we offer our lives to Him in return…we return the gift.

Archbishop Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles and Vice President of the USCCB, recently included these thoughts on Twitter:

Friends, to be a child of God, to really receive Jesus, means we have to open our lives to the gift of his love.

To be a child of God means we have to offer our lives back to God as a gift of our love.
