What Are You Looking For?

January 4, 2017

Jesus turned and saw them following Him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” (John 1:35-42)

Whenever I hear this Gospel, I picture the painting Carol gave me for Christmas a few years ago (shown below).

What Are You Looking For?

It took her some time to finish the painting, as she struggled to get the eyes “just right.” What she captured on canvas was a powerful image of the piercing eyes of Jesus.

I wonder if this is the look He gave His future disciples when He asked them, “What are you looking for?” A look that could be translated as, “Do you have what it takes to follow me?” A piercing look that warns them that it won’t be easy.

What are you looking for? Are you looking for a free ride…smooth sailing…a life of leisure? Perhaps following Jesus is not for you.

Are you looking for a challenging life that will lead to eternal happiness? Are you looking for a life that requires sacrifice and service? One that asks you to live the Gospel message each day?

If so, He invites you to follow Him.
