“Feel with the people of the Church”

April 5, 2019

My wife, Carol, is currently in El Salvador – staying in the small village of Guarjila –  with a group of high school students. The following is a reflection from two of the girls after visiting the sites of many of the martyrs from the civil war and walking in the steps of St. Oscar Romero:

Until today, we had not understood where the love offered by the Salvadoran people we’ve met comes from. We saw Guarjila as nothing more than the remains of war, and we thought we were called here to “help” the people.

After visiting the sites of the heroic martyrs and the resting place of St. Oscar Romero, a single quote from him resonated with us: “I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me I will rise again in the people of El Salvador.”

It was at this exact moment that we realized we were called down here to “feel with the people of the church.” It became clear that the love that poured out on us from the Salvadoran people was not offered because we were new people in the community or had candy for the kids. Rather, that love came directly from St. Oscar Romero. By feeling with the people, the spark from Romero that burns within them has now ignited that same spark within us.
