What a powerful opening line we encounter in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles: The community of believers was of one heart and mind. (Acts 4:32-37)
I have a job that requires that I sit in many meetings. It is rare when I experience a meeting during which we are of one heart and mind. Generally, there are as many hearts, minds, opinions, thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and solutions as there are people in the room.
But every once in a while, something draws us together. Something is said and every head in the room nods. We all acknowledge the value of what has been said and we are, at least for that moment, of one heart and mind. When that happens, it feels like the group could accomplish anything.
I can only imagine the “high” the Apostles must have experienced, knowing the entire faith community was of one heart and mind. What drew them together was the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and His promise of eternal life.
This gift should draw our faith community together as well. And when it does – when we are of one heart and mind – it is powerful. We can accomplish anything.
