It is About Responding

Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain, holding fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. Moreover, they should be tested first; then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.       (1 Timothy 3:1-13)

Since being ordained a permanent deacon in 2012, I have occasionally had bouts with feelings of unworthiness. Look at this description from 1 Timothy — I feel pretty comfortable with the “not addicted to drink” and “not greedy” parts, but am I “holding fast to the mystery of the faith”? Have I truly been “tested”?

Based on these prerequisites, am I worthy of my ordained role? Worthy or not, I was called and I do my best to serve God and the Church. I have discovered it is not about being worthy; it is about responding.

The fact that some are called to specific ministries does not let everyone else off the hook! All are called to live the Gospel by serving God and others. No one should sit back and think, “That’s someone else’s job.”

God needs all of us. We are all members of the Body of Christ, and as such, have an obligation to live our faith by spreading our faith.
