Be Willing to Share Your Faith

February 8, 2020

I had the opportunity to lead a retreat the past couple of days for the school administrators of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. The retreat was titled, God Needs Storytellers. Here are just a few of the points I emphasized on the retreat:

  • We should act with a “relaxed sense of urgency.” Urgent because the work of spreading the gospel message is so critical. Relaxed because we already possess the necessary skills to do the work.
  • Put aside the excuse, “My faith life is private.” Your faith life is PERSONAL, it is NOT private.
  • Put aside the excuse, “I am not worthy / holy enough / knowledgeable enough.” God does not need us to be theologians or canon lawyers – He needs storytellers.
  • When we share our stories of God’s active presence in our lives, we become sacramental people – we sow seeds of faith and reveal Christ to others.
  • It has never been tougher to evangelize than it is today. We live in a divisive world; good news doesn’t sell.
  • Proclaiming the gospel means pointing out the goodness and beauty in the world.
  • It’s important to share stories of the times we have failed to live up to our call as Christians. Vulnerable witnesses are powerful witnesses.
