Each day during Lent, I will be highlighting a Lenten Word (or phrase) of the Day from the readings of the day. I encourage you to reflect on this word or phrase throughout the day and incorporate it in your daily prayer.
“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
TAKE UP HIS (OUR) CROSS: Today we receive an important reminder, especially during the Lenten season – Living the life of a disciple is hard work; it is not for everyone. Not everyone that was drawn to Jesus stuck it out. Many came to hear him speak about the kingdom of heaven and watched him heal the sick and drive out demons. They were “all in” as followers right up until Jesus told them what was expected: To be a discipline meant emptying oneself. It meant putting the needs of others ahead of their own needs. It meant sacrifice. It meant taking up our own cross.
It is not about the here and now; it is about eternal life. We must roll up our sleeves each day and get to work. We must take up our cross if we hope to enjoy paradise.
