Each day during Lent, I am highlighting a Lenten Word (or phrase) of the Day from the readings of the day. I encourage you to reflect on this word or phrase and incorporate it in your prayers today.
If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” (John 10:37-38)
BELIEVE THE WORKS: I often see incredibly beautiful things in nature – waterfalls, a breath-taking sunrise, the first snowfall of the winter, flowers sprouting up in the spring, a vibrant rainbow, and on and on. I think to myself, “How could anyone NOT believe there is a God?”
I encounter loving and compassionate people every day – totally selfless individuals that reveal the face of Christ to me. I assist at the altar at Mass and participate in the Real Presence of God in the Eucharist. I see his presence and hear his words. No God?
When I am troubled, he brings me comfort. When I am anxious, he calms me. When I follow my plan instead of his, he forgives me. I feel his presence.
However, despite all of this, I experience moments of doubt. That’s when I need to recall these words: Believe the works.
If you are not blessed with blind faith or your “I can’t believe in a God I can’t see” brain will not support the existence of God, believe the works.
A good daily Lenten practice is to bring to mind all the ways God has made himself known to you – that should be more than enough proof.
