Stop Judging

June 21, 2021

Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged,
and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:1-5)

STOP JUDGING: There are times when Scripture can be cryptic. Did Jesus mean this? Or maybe He meant that. Often Jesus taught in parables, so the disciples needed to piece together the puzzle to discover His message. Today’s gospel leaves no doubt; there is no hidden message to decode. It is clear: Stop judging others.

It is a simple message that offers us much to consider. Are we judgmental? Do we judge and condemn first, and ask questions later? Are there people in our lives who have hurt us and for whom we now hold a grudge? Is it time to let go and forgive?

Try reading the passage above while looking in the mirror. It offers great food for thought.
