Renewal of Commitment

August 10 – Feast of St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr

Each year, on or around the feast day of St. Lawrence, patron saint of deacons, the permanent deacons of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis gather with the Archbishop to pray, share a meal, and renew our commitment to diaconal ministry. This occurred on Sunday night at Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House. The following are the words of commitment we offered:

Archbishop: My dear deacons, you have been called to serve Jesus Christ, who was known among His disciples as one who serves others.

Now, in the presence of your Bishop, I call you to renew your own dedication to Christ; to do the will of God generously by serving Him and His people in love and joy.

Are you resolved to discharge the Office of Deacon with humility and love in order to assist the Bishop and his priests and to serve the people of Christ?

Deacon: I am

Archbishop: Are you resolved to hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience, and to proclaim this faith in word and action as it is taught by the gospel and the Church’s tradition?

Deacon: I am

Archbishop: Are you resolved to maintain and deepen a spirit of prayer appropriate to your way of life, in keeping with what is required of you, to celebrate faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours for the Church and the whole world?

Deacon: I am

Archbishop: Are you resolved to shape your way of life always according to the example of Christ, whose body and blood you will give to the people?

Deacon: I am

Archbishop: Lord God, look with favor on these servants of Yours, who have re-dedicated themselves to the Office of Deacon, and bless them with the fullness of Your love and the strength of the Holy Spirit.

May they always imitate Your Son Jesus in this life, who came not to be served, but to serve. We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

I am blessed to be able to serve as a deacon for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and look forward to participating in this annual event for years to come.
